April 8th, 2008:
The
Parliamentary Representative for St.
Andrew South West Honorable Yolande Bain
Horsford continues to deliver quality
representation to the Constituency and
in the latest achievement, the people of
Grand Bras and surrounding areas now
have the availability of a Community
Centre and a Basketball court.

The
facilities will serve to address the
sporting, educational and social needs
of persons within the immediate
vicinity. The Community Center is
equipped with a library where persons
can solicit information to enhance their
knowledge. As Social Development
Minister, Hon. Yolande Bain-Horsford had
made a promise to the people of the
Grand Bras area, once known for its
sporting prowess, that the community
centre would be refurbished and that the
young people would be able to play
basketball at a much better level when a
hard court is constructed.
These were
among the many projects she had pledged
to undertake after winning the last
general election. Consultation in this
regard was held with the people of the
area, where Minister Horsford’s
intention was endorsed by Prime Minister
Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell. For
over a decade the persons from Grand
Bras have clamored without any success
for a new facility to replace the
dilapidated structure that was described
as an eye sore by many. During the
official opening of the dual facility
recently, Minister Horsford, described
the development as an historic
achievement for Grand Bras.
According
to her, the facility gives young people
in the area an opportunity to exert
their energies in a positive direction
through sports and social engagement.
She further indicated that the community
center can also be used to facilitate
skills and other training, especially
where it concerns the capacity to absorb
the Nation’s youngsters into the job
arena for the holistic development of
the community. The St. Andrew South West
Parliamentary Representative told the
capacity crowd at the Official opening
of the hard court and Community Centre
that her main focus is to continue to
bring benefits to the people of the
Constituency, and Grenada in general.
Prime
Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell was among
the special invited guests addressing
the gathering. He noted that it was an
extremely special occasion for him to
stand on the hard court. He said,
‘when the request was made some years
ago I was present and thought it was an
ambitious project worthy of support.’
“The realization of this project is true
testimony of my Government’s thrust
toward community development at all
levels. No amount of commendation is
too high for the Parliamentary
Representative the Honorable Yolande
Bain Horsford who made the project a
reality.’ The Prime Minister was one of
the first contributors to the project.
He had donated ten thousand dollars from
his personal funds to get it started.
Minister
Horsford was showered with praise by
community members among them Mr. Junior
Jones and Dr. Desima Williams. Dr.
Williams described Minister Horsford as
a pillar of strength and a sister who
represents positive change and
development. Jones, who is the Vice
Chairman of the Grand Bras Development
Committee said it is not very often
politicians keep their promise and
substantiated that Minister Horsford did
more than kept her word ‘in-fact she
exceeded expectations.’
It is the
common consensus of villagers that the
land mark will go down as part of her
legacy, one which she will win acclaim
in view of work done by government in
St. Andrew South West. To further
emphasise support for the community, two
basketball teams sponsored by Minister
Bain Horsford, Yolande Earth Tremors and
Bain’s Sky Walkers were featured in an
exhibition game as part of the official
opening of the hard court.
Yolande
Earth Tremors shook off the challenge by
Bain’s Sky Walkers to win comfortable on
a night that will always be pleasantly
remembered in Grand Bras History as the
night Yolande delivered big time.
