Wednesday April 16th, 2008: Former
Grenada Parliamentarian, Winston ‘Winty’
Frederick, is back home after residing
in the USA for the past twelve years and
has publicly expressed fascination over
the modernization of the country.
Mr.
Frederick served in the Grenada
Parliament from 1990 to 1995 as
Representative for St. Patrick East,
winning that seat on a GULP ticket in
the March 13, 1990 general elections.
He was
defeated in the 1995 poll by Former
Minister of Sports, Adrian ‘Spaceman’
Mitchell, who contested the seat for the
ruling New National Party. Later on, Mr.
Frederick migrated to the USA.
Speaking on
the GIS ‘Good Morning Grenada’ Programme
with host Shirma Wells, Frederick
explained that when he arrived here from
New York‘ the place looked different, I
could not believe my eyes.’ “The amount
of work that is going on in my country
it tells me that something good is
happening,” remarked Frederick. He noted
the changes in the landscape brought
about by improved infrastructure,
itemizing the Airport, the roadway
throughout the island, new schools,
Government administration building, the
bus terminus, the new cricket stadium
and playing facilities, among others.
“Grenada has a modern look and I thought
for a moment that I was in strange
territory. It is the indication that
Keith Mitchell and his Government are
doing a wonderful job,” according to the
former Parliamentary Representative for
St. Patrick East.
When asked
about his allegiance to the GULP,
Frederick noted that he has a personal
affinity with the organization but
something seems to be wrong and
identified that there is too much
in-fighting and once the squabbles
continue there will always be problems.
He hit out
at the GULP as an organization that has
suffered, in his words, "from a virus
and as it is now the party can be
considered dead."
Mr.
Frederick explained that he was invited
to a meeting that was planned to unite
the party, but he found difficulty
understanding how they were trying to
unite something that the founder of the
organization Sir Eric Matthew Gairy had
started on a united front signifying the
abbreviation GULP with the ‘U’ standing
for unity.
In my
political wisdom, according to Winty, "I
can’t see why and how they are trying
now to unite something that is already
united." Mr. Frederick said it is
difficult to understand the reasons for
the pulling and tugging and disclosed
that he has since sent in his
resignation as a member of the GULP. He
noted that Grenadians should look
towards the future and give their full
support to the NNP because it has proven
itself that it can work for the country.
He stated
that while in the USA he has been
hearing all sorts of things from
Grenadians living there, "some on the
positive side and some on the negative
side’ but seeing for himself, he is
aware of the truth. “There were so much
bad things said especially after the
hurricane that made one believe Grenada
could never be Grenada again, the way we
know it but I am here now and I have
seen,” Substantiated Mr. Frederick.
He went on
to say that now he is back he is
throwing his support behind the NNP for
the wonderful work it has done in giving
Grenada a modern look, ‘a country that
all can be proud to boast off.’ (Watch
