In what was a massive show of support,
as over
3,000 fans of the New National Party
(NNP) converged on what is commonly
know in St. Mark as ‘Heroes Square’ on
Sunday 18th May, 2008, for a
reconfirmation of the organization’s
candidate to contest the next general
election.
Incumbent
Parliamentary Representative Dr. Clarice
Modeste was given a tumultuous welcome,
having been selected by a Strategy
Committee the day before, so that she
can again take up her rightful place at
the helm of the political process in the
Parish for the ruling NNP
administration.
After
receiving the baton from Mr. Willan
Dewsbury to contest the election
inJanuary 1999, Dr. Modeste’s popularity
has hit a crescendo, with political
pundits predicting a high scoring
victory for her the next time around.
The
constituents spoke of many projects that
have been undertaken during her tenure
as Parliamentary Representative, noting
specifically improvements in the welfare
of fishermen and the fishing Industry,
care for the elderly, the resuscitation
of the Fish market in Victoria, the
Pavilion at Alston George Park,
employment, IMANI and Youth training,
refurbishment of schools, police and
medical stations, reconstruction of
roads, and an upgraded housing stock,
among other things.
“The
Government has ensured that St. Mark’s
got it fair share”, according to Dr.
Modeste.
She told
the mammoth crowd, which stretched from
Heroes Square to the Victoria Main Road
that St. Mark’s is ready, an indication
that it intends to bring back a
resounding victory for the New National
Party.
Since 1984,
the NNP has been in total command of the
Constituency of St. Mark…Mr. Felix
Alexander from 1984 to 1990, Mr. Malcolm
Antoine from 1990 to 1995, Mr. Willan
Dewsbury from 1995 to 1998 and Dr.
Claris Modeste from 1999 to date.
The entire
NNP team, including five women who will
be contesting the next general election,
was presented to the crowd.
They are
Dr. Claris Modeste; former Police
Commissioner Mr. Fitzroy Bedeau for the
Constituency of St. John; Hon. Anthony
boatswain, St. Patrick West; Senator
Carl Caton for St. Patrick East; Hon.
Roland Bhola in St. Andrew North East;
Retired School Teacher Mrs. Delma Thomas
for St. Andrew North West; Hon. Yolande
Bain-Horsford the incumbent in St.
Andrew South West; Senator Emmalin
Pierre in the politics for the first
time and holding the portfolio as
Minister of Youth in the Constituency of
St. Andrew South East; the young Devon
Rachae in St. David; St. George South,
Senator Ann David-antoine; Town of St.
George, Senator Brenda Hood; St. George
South East, Hon. Gregory bowen; St.
George North East, Mr. Kennedy Roberts;;
Hon. Elvin Nimrod in Carriacou and
Petite Martinique and Prime Minister and
Political Leader Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith
Mitchell in the NNP stronghold of St.
George North West.
Dr.
Mitchell expressed his satisfaction that
the NNP team is even more united heading
into a general poll and is confident of
victory.
He called
on all persons eighteen and over to make
sure and be registered since the New
National Party will leave anything to
chance especially where it is felt that
the peace and stability could be at
stake with the choice of any other.
He warned
that it is in the interest of the
Nation’s citizens to continue the
progress that is the much talked about
on the international circuit today, that
Grenada is seeing investors coming to do
business for the future development of
the country.
As it
relates to the Capital Bank issue, Prime
Minister Mitchell stated that his
Cabinet will be contemplating making
application to the Court to allow monies
to be paid to Depositors with
treansactions Five hundred EC dollars
and less. Some 3,700 persons fall in
this bracket.
He
explained that Government will take
moral responsibility and will ensure
that the ordinary people who have gotten
caught up in the demise of the Cap Bank
situation be given some measure of
relief.
