The Energy Minister needs to Intervene

Gregory Bowen

St. Georges, November 19th, 2008: After a series of appeal by the Opposition for the Government to do something about the rising cost of electricity, former Minister for Energy says he is pleased to hear that GRENLEC is committing to provide customers with a relief, but he believes that the Government must still do its work.

The Grenada Electricity Services, GRENLEC, has promised that Grenadians can look forward to lower electricity rates in December, since fuel prices have been reducing.

However, while the Company has given some measure of relief to customers, the former Minister of Energy Mr. Gregory Bowen said he is making another appeal to the Minister for energy in the new Government to meet urgently with the company.  He said consumers can pay far more than they are paying now if the price of fuel takes an upward turn again in the future.  The former Minister for Energy believes that not withstanding the drop the price the charges are still high and by a meeting with the company, the Minister can lobby for consumers to pay even less than they will pay in December and at the same time safeguard them from further increases.
