The 2008 General
election was a historic one in many
ways. The present NDC government
used the five years (2003-2008) and
the election campaign to concoct
lies and propaganda to tarnish the
image of the leadership of the NNP
government. We saw certain key
persons in the Trade Union Movement,
the media, the NGO community, the
religious community, the Legal
Profession, and medical Profession
all launching attack against the NNP
leadership and promoting the NDC.
Every project and
programme initiated by the NNP
government was attacked with the
sole objective of preventing them or
lessening its positive impact for
the country. The National Stadium,
the Cruise Ship Port, the Port Louis
Development, the Levera Project, the
Grand Bacolet Project, the Imani
Programme, the Debushing Programme,
the food basket programme, the
school books and uniform programme,
the Transportation Scheme and many
more came up for serious attack by
the opposition.
The character of
Peter De Savoury, Mr. Cohen of the
Calivigny Island Project, and many
others were all brought into
disrepute. A number of Grenadians
who were perceived to be supporters
of the government were also attacked
by the NDC in the most vicious way
during this period. The NDC did not
care if the country suffered or if
the individuals and their families
suffered, they had one goal, which
was to bring down the Keith Mitchell
administration and to get it’s
leader out of the political race.
The kind of nasty attack meted out
at the political leader of the NNP
and the false accusations made even
when facts were available to the
contrary shows that the NDC was
willing to stick to its objective at
any cost and was very successful at
using individuals in strategic
places to work in on its behalf to
spread the propaganda and lies. It
is only unfortunate that many
persons including some NNP
supporters were mislead and they are
only now realizing this.
It is not strange
that after the NDC achieved it’s
first objective, that it is so eager
to achieve its second objective (to
get Dr. Mitchell out of the
political race), that it is
forgetting it’s primary
responsibility, which is to govern
the country. To the detriment of
the Grenadian population, the
behavior displayed by the NDC while
it was in opposition continues in
government. The NDC is doing
everything directly and indirectly
through its operatives, to destroy
the image of the leadership of the
NNP. The resultant effects on the
country‘s economic prospect is now
there for all to see. Investors are
not willing to invest in a country
governed by individuals whose one
purpose is to destroy and not to
build. There are certainly better
places where they can go to invest
without that hassle and the attack.
Looking back at the
election campaign we saw a number of
the key persons promoting the NDC
and attacking the NNP government.
It is now clear to all, the true
motive and the reason they were so
eager to get NNP out of office. It
is also now clearer to see, the kind
of role that some persons were
playing silently behind the scene.
