St. Georges, September
18, 2008 -
The New National Party is
joining the Private Sector in their call
to the Government to hold wage
discussions as soon as possible to avoid
labour unrest.
The New
National Party is convinced that recent
statements negative statements made by
the Minister of Finance and other
Members of Government about Grenada’s
finances and economy are contributing to
an economic slow down in the nation.
When the
New National Party administration left
office, Grenada was listed as one of the
top ten economies poised for growth in
the world, despite the global economic
climate. The New National Party had
negotiated over five major investment
projects for Grenada, which was forecast
to create a minimum of 6000 new jobs
when the projects opened for business.
Former
Minister of Tourism, Dr. Modeste-Curwen
explains that investor confidence is
partly influenced by global events, but
it is equally dependant on the local
climate as well. In Grenada’s case, it
is quite clear that the slowdown in the
economy has begun in the wake of the
2008 general elections.
In addition
to the warnings of labour unrest from
the Private Sector, the New National
Party is also concerned about the job
losses, layoffs as well as slow downs
in construction, road works, and support
service industries. Even person working
in shipping and trucking have been
complaining that that business at the
port has slowed down significantly.
Even though
the world is facing hard economic times,
the New National Party recalls the
incredible challenges the nation faced
after Hurricane Ivan and notes that
challenges no matter how large, can be
overcome if the spirit, dedication and
ability to do so remains strong.
Therefore
the New National Party is supporting the
call by the Private Sector to enter into
dialogue urgently so that a collective
solution can assist the Government in
finding solutions to these problems. |
