Boundaries treaty

St. George’s, Grenada, April 14th, 2010: Her Majesty’s Opposition has advised the Government of Grenada that it will not be participating in the government consultation process since consultation according to the Government, means informing after the fact. No recommendation given, however beneficial to the people of Grenada, would be able to be incorporated into the treaty and in particular the most critical item, the boundary line, cannot be adjusted.

Trinidad entered the negotiations with complete knowledge of the area’s oil and gas potential while Grenada knew nothing having refused to deal with GPG who would have carried out the necessary detailed and extensive exploration and provided this country with the relevant information to the highest degree of accuracy. Grenada had to give up maritime space to Trinidad and Tobago to achieve an agreement effectively shifting the boundary north of the median line towards Grenada without knowing the consequences.

The Opposition questions the reason behind the haste to sign such a treaty that could be extremely detrimental to the people of Grenada and views the government’s ploy at consultation as utter disrespect for the intelligence, integrity and competence of Her Majesty’s Opposition and the population as a whole. The Opposition calls on the public to pay particular attention to this issue as the treaty cannot be reversed.
