Letter:  A warning to Church Leaders

Dear Sir,

I want to just issue a little warning to the church leaders in Grenada and I will be happy if you can help me to get the message across.

I am a strong Christian and I look at the role some church leaders play.  Sometimes, I wonder how God feels about what is happening in this country.  For example I listened during the last election campaign to one church leader saying he cannot pray for the past Prime Minister and I wonder what God’s judgment will be since his word clearly instructs us to pray for all leaders not those we support.

I want to admonish church leaders to be careful.  I recently heard of the banning of the Mr. Vagas and the next question I asked was why.  I don’t support any such artiste but I was just curious to find out why.  It appears to me that some religious leaders are prepared to blindly support and defend this Government even if they look foolish in the end.  I heard one pastor commending the Government for the decision, giving the impression that the grounds for the decision was morality and the observance of lent.  Well I was about to do the same thing but I was a little more smart to wait till I heard the Minister responsible directly.  The Minister then came on and said he has no problem with Mr. Vagas and him coming to Grenada at this time, it is just that the application was too late.  There was no reference to morality or to lent, in the Minister’s response.  I hope the pastor now understands that it does not make sense blindly supporting the Government or a party.

Again I listen to some church leaders commending the Government for not proceeding with Casino Gambling.  I don’t support that either but when I listen to more details I am convinced that the Government is playing political games regarding this issue and is trying to use the churches to boost its credibility.  I asked myself a simple question why did the prime minister call for consultation of the matter if he feels so strongly that it should not happen.  In addition how can I as a Christian commend the Prime Minister for his public statements when he heads the same Cabinet that gives authority to Lotto to increase gambling activities with a new midday draw?

I will follow Christ blindly but I will NEVER follow Any Government or political organisation blindly.  Church leaders please take heed.  The judgment is coming.

A. Collier
