St. George’s, Grenada, May
7th 2010: Leader of the Opposition, Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell has
publicly announced that the continued actions by the NDC to victimize ordinary
workers and to violate their human and constitutional rights have forced the
Opposition to take the matter to the regional and international community.
Dr. Mitchell stated that his
continuous call to the administration to desist from these practices, which
started since the last general elections, has always been ignored by the NDC
administration. He calls on Non Governmental Organisations including the Trade
Unions and the Church to denounce some of the actions of the Tillman Thomas
administration including the recent decision to send home workers from the
ministry of Social Services because of their perceived political affiliation.
The former Prime Minister says
the firing of these workers is the latest case of workers being victimized by
the administration. He said that the workers, who come from various parishes in
the country, were issued letters by the Prime Minister’s wife only the day
before the termination of their services, and one day after the Prime Minister
announced in a national address that the economic situation in the country is
improving and more jobs are being created by his administration.
Dr. Mitchell says one must
never forget that under the current NDC administration a worker from Carriacou
was issued a letter saying that she was fired because she attended a political
meeting while she was on vacation in the United States of America.
He says these kinds of actions
must never be condoned and calls on every Grenadian to stand up and protect the
democracy we have worked so hard to create over the years.
