St. George’s, Grenada November 25th,
2011: Leader of Her Majesty’s Opposition, Dr. The Rt. Hon. Keith
Mitchell is calling on the Government to meet its
responsibility to pay all road workers who have worked in
the Government's Debushing Programme but are yet to receive
payments.
According to Dr. Mitchell, the
NDC administration continues to demonstrate its lack of care
and concern for the most vulnerable sectors of our society.
He pointed to the decision of
the government to cut the pay of the said workers by 100
dollars per fortnight, while at the same time increasing the
number of working hours and the amount of work per day. The
Government has also cut by over 50% the number of persons
benefiting from the programme resulting in hundreds of
Grenadians not being able to finds any form of employment
since the last general elections.
Rather than correct the
injustice against this category of workers the Government
continues to do all it can to add more pressure on them by
refusing to pay on time those who have received part time
employment through the programme.
He said some workers have been
visiting his office out of desperation explaining that they
have not been paid for more than one month since completing
the contract.
The Opposition Leader says what
is most unfortunate about this situation is that the NDC
continues to find millions of dollars to facilitate the
travel of Government Ministers on joy rides all over the
world; and the payment of hundreds of thousands of dollars
monthly to persons who are hired on the basis of friendship
and political support.
