ST. GEORGE'S, GRENADA, Thursday, July 18, 2013 -China’s first female Ambassador to Grenada, Madam Ou Boqian has promised to deepen the relations between the People’s Republic of China and the people of Grenada.
The new ambassador was given a warm and rousing reception at a welcome party last week at the Crown Ball Room of the Grenada Grand Beach Resort.
Foreign Affairs Minister, the Honourable Nickolas Steele, warmly greeted the senior Chinese official.
“I ask you all to join me in raising a glass to welcome our new ambassador from the People's Republic of China. I am sure by the time you leave, you will be a sister and daughter of the soil”, the Foreign Affairs Minister said, to rousing applause from Government officials, Members of the Diplomatic Corps and other dignitaries gathered for the ceremony.
The new Chinese Ambassador has been in St George’s for about two months, acquainting herself with the new job as well as enjoying the Grenada culture.
The Grenada/ China relations were rekindled in 2005 under the leadership of Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Keith Mitchell, a development that has been cherished by the government of China.
Ambassador Boqian says, that the relationship has grown tremendously over the years.
“I am proud to see the Cricket Stadium not only serving Grenadians for sporting activities; but for functions and entertainment”.
She also spoke about the Chinese Agriculture Mission in Lasagesse, designed to assist the Ministry of Agriculture and local farmers, and the 1,000 low income houses built by China for Grenadians whose homes were destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2005.
The Hurricane destroyed 27,000 of the 39,000 households in the country.
“I am working to further enhance the relationship between China and Grenada”, the Ambassador told the party.
Foreign Affairs Minister, the Hon. Nickolas Steele said, that the country has benefitted immensely from the warm assistance granted by China, which has helped in the development of the country.
He says, that the relationship has been growing.
“Under the leadership of your President and the Honourable Dr. Keith Mitchell, our two countries have grown from strength to strength.”
Minister Steele thanked the Chinese government for the valuable support rendered, and said, that he looked forward to the two countries developing even stronger bonds of friendship.
Steele is also grateful to the people of China for the valuable assistance rendered in human resource development.
“As you can see, tonight 21 Grenadians are getting ready to go to universities in China, and dozens are here having received the benefits of scholarships in China”, he disclosed, noting that countless others like himself, Government Ministers and others have attended seminars and courses in China.
“These are some of the benefits that we have had”, the Foreign Affairs Minister said.
