ST. GEORGE'S, GRENADA, September 03, 2013: September is Labour Month and the theme chosen for this year’s celebration is “Promoting Jobs, Protecting Workers in an ever changing world”.

The Ministry of Labour opened Labour Month with a church service at the Springs Open Bible Church and an address to the nation on Sunday September 1.

Staff of the Ministry and Minister for Works Hon. Gregory Bowen, along with Labour officials, such as Labour representative in the Upper House of Parliament Senator Ray Roberts, Abel Newton, Executive Director of the Grenada Employer’s Federation and Adrian Francis, President of the Public Workers Union attended the church service.

Permanent Secretaries from the Ministry of Agriculture and Tourism and Culture were also present.

The address to the nation which was delivered by Permanent Secretary Javan Williams on behalf of Labour Minister Hon. Elvin Nimrod who was out of the island on state business.

PS Williams said, the theme “Promoting Jobs, Protecting Workers in an ever changing world” brings to mind what Government views as a pre-requisite for social and economic development. He noted, that this is in keeping with the International Labour Organisation’s Decent Work Country Programme.

Presently, Grenada is enjoying a stable industrial climate he said, because government has promoted working together on the basis of tri-parties, which involves workers (Unions), employers and government).

He encouraged the Trade Union Council (TUC) and employers, that in the process of managing workers, please do not hesitate to consult with the Ministry of Labour to foster even better relations.

A number of activities have been planned to celebrate the month spanning the tri-island state.

Labour Officials will visit schools in Grenada on the 3rd, 5th, 9th, and 12th

Health Walk On the 11th, from the Botanical Gardens through to Golf Course onto Kirani James Boulevard and back to Tanteen.

The rest of the activities will take place in Carriacou and Petite Martinique where the Labour team will spend three days.

A Workshop on Industrial Relations & Health and Safety will be held on the 17th

Walk- About and School visit on the 18thand

On the 19th Community Day (Complaints and Q&A), Hillsborough and Presentation on Labour Laws, Petite Martinique
